Just to do what you find interesting – making sure you have interesting questions is far more important than trying to come up with answers!

I would give the same advice to an aspiring scientist as I would to an aspiring “whatever”: if you really want to pursue this, keep trying, work hard, no matter what! Persistence, hard work and dedication are among the most important qualities. If you can be a bit creative and are really clever, even better! But the hardest part (I think-the others may have different advice!) particularly when you are a scientist, is to keep going even when things don´t work-because invariably they won´t. Because science is about discovering new things, and then proving to others that what you found is true, you need to be really critical of your experiments and yourself, and really methodical in your work. And last thing: always remember that science is also fun!

I would advise aspiring scientists to just keep asking questions! This might seem very general, but that is basically what scientists do for a living. How does this work? Why does this happen? Can we make it better? What would happen if I do this? Also, try and work on time management and organisation. If this is something that you are naturally good at, that’s great. But if not, start practicing now as it will help in the future!

I wouldn’t worry too much about what you need to do right now, since you will have time to develop the abilities you want in the future. My advice would be: try it! there are many programs directed to young future scientists in which you can actually get some hands-on experience. There are also science festivals when you can get in touch with other people’s work and discuss it. Just go and try different thinks, get to know science 🙂
