When I was little my perfect future relied on what film I had just watched! When I first saw Jurassic Park all I wanted to be was a Palaeontologist…. or a dinosaur park owner. When I first saw Star Wars I knew I’d be a pretty awesome Jedi. But apparently owning a dinosaur park is too dangerous and being a jedi doesn’t pay well enough, so that’s why I turned to science as a career instead.
When I was little, I wanted to be a writer – I have always loved fantasy novels, like Harry Potter! I wanted to one day get married, have a family, live in the country with some pets. I didn’t imagine being a scientist, but now, I struggle to imagine being anything else!
When I was very little I wanted to be a detective (like Sherlock Holmes). I thought that they were the cool guys asking questions and solving mysteries. Then I discovered theater and wanted to be an actress for a while…and after that I came back to solving mysteries and started to get really into science. Despite that I still enjoy theater a lot, although I stopped acting a while ago.
Other than academically, I always wanted my life to be dynamic and changing, not stable and boring (science covers that). I also wanted a hobby that got me some adrenaline shots (climbing does). I guess things are working out pretty well.
I never had a perfect future, or a real plan. I decided as I went along what I wanted at that time, and then did my best to achieve it. This is maybe because when I was little I wanted to do too many things! I think I wanted to be a movie star at one point though…
