Stress affects health in general and it has particular effects on the gut: there are studies showing how stress leads to bad health in the gut. Some people are more sensitive than others, obviously. For example, my best friend used to get tummy ache every time she had an exam. This can be caused, at least in part, by changes in the microbiota. Microbiota is a term used to describe the bacteria that live inside our gut. Yes, we have lots of bacteria inside our gut, and they are actually good for us (or at least some of them are, lets say 85%) – they help us digesting the food and keeping the immune system in good shape. Stress can make the percentage of good bacteria go down, and this in turn affects the cells in the gut.
