The idea didn’t actually come from myself, it was created by a group of engineers and physicists in the larger group I work in. By the time I joined they had already started building prototypes! My job is to use the biology that I know to find more applications for this cool technology. If the fibre can look inside of the lung, it means we can see things happen inside the body that we’ve never seen before. Personally, I’m hoping to use it to see how our white blood cells act inside the lung during health and disease. If we can clearly see with our fibre that they aren’t working properly in disease, that’s something we can take as an opportunity to provide drugs to get them working again and improve the lungs of a patient!
