Hi, that’s an interesting one, and you really made me think. I feel that most of my family are not into science quite as much as I do and there aren’t any other scientists in my family that I know of. I’ve got an aunt and uncle who are interested in science and used to help me with homework a lot, they are both artists and art teachers, one at 6th form and one at University. So I don’t think my family specifically pointed me towards science, though I was always encouraged to read and my interest might stem from being a dinosaur-obsessed little boy.

I have a 12-year-old cousin who is very into science and has always enjoyed it at school. I think he wants to be a footballer but I am working on his backup plan! My wife is interested in science and works in physiotherapy, we often talk about science in the news and she humours my interest too! Our toddler is also an excellent scientist as he is curious about everything and has no fear. I also talk science with my wife’s mum, who was a nurse and knows more about health and disease than I do! Other than that I have lots of friends who are scientists, most of whom I met at Uni. Some of them have been on I’m a Scientist in previous years!

Not really! No-one in my family had done science or medicine before I started. Thats fine, though – variety is important and keeps me from thinking too much about the same stuff. My wife is a medical scientist as well now, though. It sometimes helps as we can try out new ideas on each other to see if they’re sensible or not!

Not especially, I am an only child and my parents were an architect and a computer programmer (although I find that stuff really hard!). But they are really interested in what I do, even if they dont fully understand it! My fiancee is also a scientist working for the NHS so he gets what I do which is nice to be able to talk to him about work 🙂
