If I discovered an illness that no-one had identified before, I would start by looking at the symptoms and carrying out a study to see how many people have these symptoms to figure out how common it is, or what similarities there are between them. I would then probably get a hospital lab to run a load of different tests of the blood and samples to see if there were any clues about what was causing it. A lot of science work is like detective work – looking for clues, building up evidence, thinking outside the box!
