A food chain is the order of prey->predators that happens in nature. It shows how energy (in the form of food) is passed from one animal to the next. This starts with the Sun, which provides energy for grass to grow – this is the producer. The grass is the eaten by a grasshopper, which can be referred to as the primary consumer (its the first thing to eat the producer). Then a sparrow comes along and eats the grasshopper, so it is the secondary consumer. If a snake then managed to eat the sparrow, it becomes the tertiary consumer. And lastly, the snake gets eaten by an owl – this is called the Apex predator as nothing else preys on the owl in this food chain.
