As a scientists that research about cancer, my first priority would be a way of curing cancer: that would probably involve a huge computer able to do a snapshot of our bodies and decide which drugs each person should take. But if it had to be something unrelated to my field, I would like to invent a teleportation machine to travel around and being able to visit the people I love regardless of where I live.

Great question. Similar to Ester, I would love to invent something which could detect cancer. Someone in the live-chat earlier made me think about micro-robots that could detect cancer, so that would be amazing – then robots could help us find and kill cancer in the body!

Given that I can choose absolutely anything…..I’d invent a machine that can measure how hard someone is trying. That way, people could be rewarded on the basis of effort rather than success. This would form the basis of a fairer world, exams would be transformed overnight and all our problems would quickly vanish….. I’d have to make sure no-one was actively trying to be bad, of course….

I have always always told my friends in Physics that they should invent a time machine. I would really love to go back in time to see what the planet looked like thousands or millions of years ago. We find fossils of dinosaurs, and that gives us an idea of what a very few animals looked like. But a lot of animals with no skeletons do not fossilise at all or only under very specific conditions, which occur rarely (worms for example!), which means we really have only a very tiny idea of what the planet used to be like. So as long as it were safe (I really don´t want to be eaten by a giant prehistoric shark), and my presence did not change anything (I have seen too many Sci Fi movies), I would love to be a “time tourist”. Wouldn´t you????
