The first person to really discover antibiotics and understand exactly how they help get rid of bacteria was Alexander Fleming. It was actually just by luck that he figured it out as well. He’d accidentally let some mould grow on a plate he knew had some bacteria inside. He could see that all around the mould on the plate, the bacteria had been killed of and couldn’t grow back. He then showed that even if he diluted this ‘mould juice’ by a lot, it could still kill off bacteria! So Fleming named it Penicillin and that started a new age in medicine where we can treat bacteria much faster and effectively. There’s been over 100 different types of antibiotics discovered since, and many of them are pretty specialised in killing certain types of bacteria more than others
