Deforestation usually happens for a few reasons – to clear the land in order to build on it or keep animals on the land or to harvest wood from the trees to be used as fuel or building material. For example, coal that we burn to light fires or provide energy for some machines all comes from trees. The bad thing is that trees are a really important part of the ecosystem that keeps our planet alive and healthy. Plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a major contributing factor in global warming (which, yes, is a real thing and is a real problem) so deforestation removes one of the best ways we have to clear some of that CO2.
